Review by Cate Gray

Ellington At Newport is a classic album by Duke Ellington, which was recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1956. The album captures the energy and excitement of Ellington's performance, and showcases his remarkable talent as a bandleader, composer, and pianist.

The album features some of Ellington's most famous compositions, including "Take the A Train," "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue," and "Jeep's Blues." The performances are full of improvisation and spontaneity, and the musicians are clearly having a great time on stage.

One of the highlights of the album is the legendary performance of "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue," which features a solo by tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves. The solo builds in intensity and excitement, and the audience can be heard cheering and clapping along.

From what I heard Paul Gonzalez played into the wrong mic. Is this true?

It swings, I like it, but is in essence just a sweaty tenor solo. Lots of comment about the 'greatest solo in jazz' etc etc. Borderline Jazz meets R&B/ Rock and Roll. Coltrane said he used to play stuff like that in bars when he was coming up, he called it 'walking the plank'.
Most of the attention goes to the solo, which is admirable, but the entire orchestra could not be tighter and more on point. A masterful performance.

Don't forget, Jo Jones was slapping time just off stage with a rolled up copy of the daily news. The band was playing as much to Joe as the crowd. When cat Anderson stood up and booted the band home it,s enough to get any jazz lover high.

It's been said many times that Mr. Paul Gonsalves' 26 chorus solo helped tremendously in reviving Mr. Ellington's career.
Whenever discussing his age, King Ellington often stated "I was reborn at Newport"

Drop is around 12:13, if you don't have enough time. It's a train that runs over everything. The whole world. This is thrilling from here on. The build...it moves into ecstasy.

A question for the connesseures: does anybody know about some similar performances of Duke Ellington and Paul Gonsalves whithout the Big band? I mean a quartet which included Duke and Gonsalves that swings so hard?

I remember one time I was listening to this while smoking a cigar. I was so caught up in this performance that I burned that cigar down to the nub before its time....

The crowd's insane cheering is a major element of that interval...and Gonsalves plays them like a total Master.

So the story goes that after this performance, and the subsequent resurgence of Duke Ellington's career, whenever someone asked Duke when he was born he would answer "July 7th, 1956."
So today, July 7, 2021, I want to wish Edward Kennedy Ellington a happy 65th birthday.
