Review by Jassi Oberai

Mario Lanza's album, Le Prince Etudiant Et Succes DOperettes, is a delightful collection of operatic pieces that showcase the tenor's incredible range and vocal prowess. The album features a mix of classic and contemporary pieces, with each track expertly arranged to highlight Lanza's unique style.

From the opening track, "Le Prince Etudiant," to the closing number, "La Vie En Rose," Lanza's performance is nothing short of breathtaking. His ability to convey emotion through his voice is particularly evident on tracks like "La Donna E Mobile" and "Granada," where he effortlessly switches between powerful and tender tones.

The album also features several duets, including "Sous Le Ciel De Paris" with French singer Lucienne Delyle, and "O Sole Mio" with Italian tenor Tito Schipa. The chemistry between Lanza and his fellow performers is palpable, adding an extra layer of depth to each track.

I hear that there are recordings of Edmond trying to sing these songs and they are as bad as can be imagined. Justice would be better served if those recordings were dubbed in with his true voice. Better yet, can't we photo shop Mario's face on the screen and take Edmond's out? I know you can do that for us Vincent...just say "yes, I can!"

At 3.48, Prince Karl says, "I'm on my way to Nordhausen". The operetta (by Sigmund Romberg) upon which a later musical & this film was based, was composed in 1924...long before Nordhausen, in the district of Thuringia, became infamous during WW2 as the site of a concentration camp that used slave labour in various war industries, including building the V2 rocket. Around 20,000 of the slave labourers died of disease, starvation and brutal treatment by the guards.

Ann Blyth should have won an Oscar just for this last scene. You could feel what she was feeling ( those facial expressions can't be duplicated). Edmund Gwenn was one of the greatest character actors ever! Great cast. Purdom did a great lip synch in this musical BUT being the "go to" man when they needed a quick fill in didn't help his career, He was later known as "the last minute man" which was rather cruel since he did such a great job stepping in on such short notice. This is my all time favorite musical. I've watched it at least 50 times! Thanks for posting this great scene -")

I was 9 years old in 1954 when my father took me to see The Student Prince. Now I am 75, and cannot count how many times I've watched the movie over the years. These days, I could care less about lip-syncing, if the movie was a flop or not, the reason it was made. It was when I first saw it, and remains, something magical. The film has a fairy tale quality about it, and tells a timeless story of love's -and life's- joys and sorrows; it's wins and losses. My favorite scene has always been the last: Karl's return to Ruder's Inn, the last meeting with Kathy, and the cab ride back to the train with Professor Juttner, and the student chorus singing Gaudeamus Igitur in the background. "Gaudeamus, let us rejoice while we are young." Our dreams measure us, we don't measure them.
