Review by Xin Xin Wang

At Town Hall by Mingus With Eric Dolphy is a legendary jazz album that showcases the exceptional musical talent of two of the greatest jazz musicians of all time. The album is a live recording of a concert that took place at Town Hall in New York City in 1964, and it captures the energy and excitement of the performance perfectly.

The album features a range of jazz classics, including "So Long Eric," "Parkeriana," and "Take the A Train," all played with a unique and innovative approach that is characteristic of Mingus and Dolphy's style. The musicianship on display throughout the album is truly exceptional, with Mingus' bass playing providing a solid foundation for Dolphy's virtuosic saxophone and flute solos.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Fables of Faubus," a political commentary on the segregationist governor of Arkansas at the time. Mingus' passionate vocals and Dolphy's soaring saxophone combine to create a powerful and moving performance that is still relevant today.

Oh how I LOVE this song. Not only is this best recording of Meditations, but it is also one of the most emotional and deep songs I have ever heard. You can tell that these cats are just pouring their souls into this song! The solos are incredible and just full of expression! Eric Dolphy's solo is by far the best solo I've heard on this song. I also love how they transition to that dark and mournful part at the beginning! This is just fucking magic right here.

I went to see them 3 times on this European Tour in 1964 and got hooked on Eric Dolphy for life. What an extraordinary experience it was to see these guys 'live' in concert and actually have the chance to talk to them individually after the show :)

I'm sure Minus played & recorded this many times. This is the third recording I've heard. The other 2 being Live at the Jazz Workshop w/Jane Getz & John Handy replacing Byard & Dolphy
and the 1 on Europe, which had the same personnel as this 1.

I was shown this version about 25 years ago, and it has remained, since that time, the greatest piece of music I've ever heard.
